"Caesar"

Ch. Julius Caesar Nadina-Sis

OFA Hips Good, Elbows Normal, Patellas Normal, Cerf 2006

Casear came to live in Lebec in May, 2004. He made a very long flight from the Czech Republic, taking it all in stride. The only thing he didn't like in Southern California was the temperature. He made it very clear that he preferred the shade, air conditioning, anything but that California sun. He would run from shade spot to shade spot, even on a leash. Luckily, he adapted, and has made my life better with his presence.

Caesar at RassCaesar's temperament is remarkable. On several occasions, he has gone into the show ring with a handler he met only minutes previously, and been perfectly happy. This is almost unheard of in Briards, who are most comfortable around people they know. I had the opportunity to meet his sire in 2004 in France, and was impressed by his temperament as well.

Caesar just really likes 99.9% of the people he meets. He is a very exuberant boy, so visitors are apt to find 80 pounds of black Briard in their lap. And then he moves from lap to lap, just in case the next person is needing a Briard hug. At dog parks, he plays with one and all. He does like to boss around his female housemates, but they take it in stride. The Grande Dam of Lebec, Sassy, thinks Caesar is really cute, and even as a great-great-grandmother loves to flirt with him. Of course, if he fails to respect her, this 55 pound old girl takes down the 80 pound young male, just by force of will.

Caesar has two weak points. The first is children. He is so eager to get up close and personal with them, he must be restrained, and that leads to frustration. Very few kids can take a body hit from an eager Briard male! That is more a failing of me as a trainer, than Caesar as a dog. His other failing is small, white, spotted dogs. Raised with a young Bulldog, Caesar sees anything in that color pattern as a joyous toy, and they don't all feel that way. We don't hang around the terrier or toy group rings at shows.

Caesar is a very elegant, typey Briard. He needs more width of head and body, and like many Briards, could use more front angulation. I am eager to see how he looks at maturity, which for him will be at least three years of age. Caesar was bred by Naďa Střalková, of Nadina-Sis. His sister Jewel lives at Briardale. Caesar has one litter on the ground, and the pups inherited his happy disposition. He finished his Championship easily, and was Puppy Select at the 2004 BCA Rassemblement, and one of only four Black Males Selected at the 2006 BCA Rassemblement. He is now taking time off from the show ring to mature, to grow some coat if the puppies will let him, and hopefully to learn some manners. What a shame he has the handicap of me on the end of the leash! But we will persevere.
